Wild Nephin walking

My name is Kathleen Walshe. I am the promotor of Wild Nephin Walking.  I am a qualified marine and countryside guide with years of experience in organising and leading walks throughout North West Mayo. This area is renowned for its natural beauty and stunning countryside. If you wish to experience this for yourself please contact me for further information. Personally I will be cooking breakfast and organising packed lunches for our walkers and leading the walks Thomas will work alongside me. He is a cook and trained baker and will be making artisan breads and cooking a traditional Irish evening meal.

The walking business will cover the Nephin Beg Area and outside areas of North West Mayo (within 1 hour’s drive from base). The market will include individuals or groups who wish to walk and stay in our cottage.

I feel the wilderness of the area is our selling point. I want to ensure our guests have a unique experience difficult to get anywhere else. The Nephin Beg & Achill Mountains are among the most dramatic in Ireland. In total there are seven peaks towering over 600 metres, making this a hillwalkers paradise. There are also a number of low level walks adjacent to the Greenway and the famous Bangor Trail which cuts through the Nephin Beg Mountains and into Ireland’s most remote wilderness.

Remarkable landscapes full of ancient history and culture are ready to be explored and walking is a wonderful way of taking a relaxing break from everyday pressures, safe in the knowledge that all our careful planning ensures you get an outstanding and memorable experience.

The North-Western Coast of Mayo, rich in archaeological landscape, with its flourishing flora and fauna, majestic cliffs and rocky coves, is just waiting to be discovered by the walkers.

Over 11,000 hectares in the Nephin Beg Range of  North West Mayo have been designated as Ireland’s first wilderness area the first of its kind in Western Europe . It comprises of Atlantic blanket bog and mountainous terrain, rivers and lakes, covering a vast uninhabited and unspoilt wilderness dominated by the Nephin Beg mountain range.

Glenamong(628m) is in the middle of it all. The mighty peaks of Slieve Carr (721m) and Nephin Beg(627m) tower to the south.  Nephin(806m) and the mystical Birreencorragh(698m) rise in the east.  Bengorm(582m) and Corranabinnia(716m) due south.

Glenamong (Gleann na Mhoin- meaning the glen of the bog) overlooks the glen of the bog to the west. The deel river rises on the northern end of  Birreencorragh.  Across Clew Bay Croagh Patrick(764m) stands out and is known locally as the Reek.

From the  mountain tops of the Nephin Beg Range you overlook Clew Bay with Clare Island in the distance and Knockmore(462m)  standing  out. The stunning cliffs and mountains of Achill rise from the sea. The finger of Achill head sticks out in the distance.

If you decide to holiday with us you can experience it all. Rugged, wild and stunning countryside during our walks.  Cosy, traditional and peaceful surrondings on your return to the cottage. Bia croi (heart food) to restore your energy. You can help make this dream come true.
